18 Most Powerful Performance Cars For Under $50,000

Most people tend to think that true performance cars are out of reach of average buyers, but they are wrong. Even if you are not a millionaire, you can still experience high horsepower sports cars, cool muscle cars, brutal hot hatches or performance sedans. There are plenty of really exciting and high-powered cars on the market for the price of a well-equipped family sedan or mid-sized SUV. For $50,000 or less, there are numerous interesting choices with not only considerable power but with very advanced technology, drivetrain options, great looks and superb performance. As you will see, some of those cars are as fast, or even faster than couple-year-old supercars which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. That is why we have compiled the list of 20 best and most powerful cars you can buy for $50,000 and we have listed not only the most powerful vehicles but also the best performance cars for that kind of money. Volkswagen Golf R

Der neue Volkswagen Golf R

The Golf GTI was always the quintessential hot hatch and it still is one of the best around, but it’s just not powerful enough. For $36,000 you can get a pretty exclusive and brutally quick Golf R. The power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four which delivers 290 hp and send it to all four wheels through intelligent AWD system. Yes, we know that the price is pretty steep for a compact but this is not an ordinary Golf. This is the best of what Volkswagen has to offer in terms of technology, equipment, and performance. Also, compared to the other hot hatches on the market, the Golf R is a very elegant and stylish car.

Audi S4

Audi S4

Performance sedan classic, the S4 is still one of the most interesting Audis you can buy. First, its compact dimensions make it very easy to drive. Second, the 3.0-litre supercharged engine delivers 352 hp and third, all that power is sent to all four wheels through Audi’s signature Quattro AWD system. And the last but not least, the base S4 comes with a 6-speed manual which will bring a smile to faces of all driving purists. For 2017, WRX STI has 305 hp from 2.5-liter engine and brutal acceleration figures. Thanks to all-wheel drive and automatic transmission, the WRX STI can achieve 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. mazda_mx-5

The Miata’s power level is nothing special and 2017 model has 155 hp from its 2.0-liter four cylinder. But that is not the point. Ford Taurus SHO

autowp.ru_ford_taurus_sho_45

The Taurus SHO is a pretty unlikely performance sedan from Ford. The Focus RS and Mustang GT are stealing the headlines but those are not only fast and powerful cars in the current lineup. One of the more interesting is the SHO. Under a pretty ordinary body hides 3.5 liter EcoBoost turbo engine with 365 hp, all-wheel drive system, and quite significant performance potential. All that for $41,000 MSRP makes Taurus SHO a pretty good deal.

BMW M240i xDrive

bmw_m240i_xdrive_coupe_71

Chevrolet SS

2016 Chevrolet SS

The Chevrolet SS is kind of a unicorn in the modern automobile industry. It is a classic sedan with great V8 power, rear wheel drive, and manual transmission. It is the purest form of performance sedan and the last of its kind. Despite the praises from the motoring press, the market was not so amused by its charms resulting in very modest sales numbers. However, you can still buy this car at $46,000 for which you will get 6.2-liter V8 with 415 hp, brutal acceleration, and perfect V8 soundtrack.

Dodge Charger R/T

dodge_charger_r_t_11

Just like the Challenger, Dodge Charger is inspired by the glorious muscle car era of the 60s. But in its latest incarnation, the Charger is a four door sedan, not a coupe. However, that doesn’t stop it from being a muscle car at heart and it has many performance versions, including the famous and terrifyingly powerful Hellcat. For less than $46,000 you can get the Charger R/T with 485 hp from 6.4-liter Hemi, nice equipment, great performance and muscle heritage.

Ford Raptor

Ford F-150 Raptor

This one is a little bit controversial entry on our list but we have good reasons to include it. First, despite being a truck, this is a performance vehicle. Second, with a 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine delivering 450 hp this Ford is capable of pretty respectable acceleration figures (5.3 seconds to 60 mph). Third, with the base price of $50,000 it fits our limit, just barely. Fourth, Raptor is capable of achieving crazy speeds on rough terrain faster than any other stock car.

Cadillac ATS Coupe

cadillac_ats_coupe_1

The ATS Coupe has started as a competitor to the BMW 4-Series coupe and it managed to achieve more due to great looks, luxury appointments, and best chassis in its class. honda_civic_type_r_95

The 2.0-liter four cylinder delivers 306 hp to the front axle over special and electronically controlled front differential. The rest of the car is equally high-tech with boy racer looks appropriate for a hot hatch. For the base price of around $35,000, this is the perfect hot hatch for all Japanese cars lovers out there.

volvo_concept_40.1_3

The SUV market is the biggest at the moment and all manufacturers want a piece of the action. That is why Volvo is introducing the XC40, a compact-sized SUV smaller than the XC60 which has just debuted. It should be available sometime next year and it will be similarly styled as the rest of Volvo’s SUV fleet. The main competitors are Audi Q3 and BMW X3 but Volvo should deliver more refinement and better styling to the segment.

Alpine A110

alpine_a110_premiere_edition_5

Renault has teased us with concepts for long but for 2018, finally, we have a production-ready model. It is a new version of the legendary Renault Alpine A110 from the early ’70s but re-imagined for the 21stcentury. The prices are not yet revealed but this car is a pure enthusiasts’ road machine and we are delighted to see it finally available for sale.

Audi Q8

range_rover_velar_r-dynamic_p380_hse_83

The Velar is an interesting new model that is just being announced with sales starting later this year as a 2018 model. It is slotted between Evoque and Discovery as a mid-sized SUV but it is more than just that. The Velar is kind of a personal luxury SUV dedicated to driving pleasure as well as comfort and equipment. It should bring a new dimension of SUV driving to the crowded segment and we are eager to see it in action.

Kia Stinger

kia_stinger_gt_21

One of the biggest surprises of 2017 and the most anticipated vehicles of 2018 is the new Kia Stinger. It is a sedan with great performance, fantastic styling, and affordable price. Hyundai i30 N

Hyundai-RN30-concept-front-three-quarters

You can expect at least 250 hp on the front axle, sharp handling, and aggressive exterior as well as good performance and swift acceleration. The i30 N should go against Ford Focus ST or Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Toughest SUVs And Trucks of 2017

You probably know that modern-day SUVs evolved from rugged and basic off-road vehicles from the past. Everything started from Jeeps and Land Rovers which earned their living by serving in the war, crossing the deserts and exploring hard to reach places. Then somebody thought of putting nicer interior, cabin insulation, and softer suspension to make it better for normal driving, and the SUV market was born. People loved the idea of having tough and big off-road vehicle in their driveways, capable of doing anything, but they also liked that it drove like a regular sedan. Basically, they liked the image but didn`t like the rough nature of off road cars. Manufacturers gave the public exactly that, tough looking SUVs with a gentle driving characteristic which are only suited for mall parking lots or highway cruising. Somewhere along the way, the simple but effective body on frame construction was lost and SUVs continued to be built on unibody platforms which stripped them of their off-road ability. Most modern SUVs look like they could cross Sahara without any problems but in reality, they wouldn`t last 15 minutes in harsh desert driving conditions. However, for the fans of really capable and tough SUVs and truck models, there is still hope since manufacturers are still producing models that can go through hell and back and even look good doing it. We have compiled a list of 10 vehicles that are durable, tough, engineered to endure anything and still good looking for you to drive them anywhere. Here are 10 toughest SUVs and trucks of 2017.

Cadillac Escalade

cadillac_escalade_26

Despite the fact that it looks like a luxury suite on wheels and it is the size of an apartment block, this Cadillac is one tough SUV. The body on frame construction, heavy-duty suspension, powerful V8 engine with 420 hp and big tow rating makes this luxury model one very capable car. Of course, the off-road driving is not its strongest side since this is a big and heavy SUV but the Escalade will provide good protection and can endure a lot of punishment. This is why the Cadillac Escalade is often used as the basis for bulletproofing and part of the motorcades of politicians and VIPs.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

The Colorado is a mid-sized pickup truck, smaller and cheaper than the regular Silverado but it has good construction, and interesting options to make it a very tough truck. The ZR2 package transforms this ordinary work vehicle into an off-road rocket. With the upgraded suspension, bigger wheels, locking front and rear differentials, Colorado ZR2 is up for anything and can go anywhere.
Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited

autowp.ru_jeep_wrangler_19

The Jeep Wrangler and its four-door variant, Wrangler Unlimited are the quintessential off-road vehicles and a direct descendant of the famous Jeep Willys which fought in World War II. That unique heritage and tradition is still alive and well with 2017 Wrangler and the basic concept is unchanged. The Jeep Wrangler is one of the toughest and most durable vehicles you can buy due to its simple and rugged construction, powerful engines and suspension built for off-road use. It is a little bit uncomfortable on paved surfaces but in mud, dust, and dirt, Wrangler is the king.
Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

trd_toyota_4runner_pro_1_1

Toyota always had several tough and capable vehicles in their model lineup. One of the most interesting is the new 4Runner but with factory TRD Pro package. The base 4Runner is a very capable and strong SUV with the body on frame construction, strong suspension, and powerful engine. But with TRD Pro package it is a true off-road gem. Bigger tires, tougher springs, underbody protection and locking differential are just a part of the package and the best news is that the 4Runner TRD Pro costs around $36,000 which is quite cheap for such a capable and good looking machine.
Lexus GX

lexus_gx_460_29

Nobody expected Lexus GS to be such a good all-around vehicle since its size, equipment and looks all suggest it is just another luxury SUV who has forgotten about its off-road roots. But, the body on frame construction, advanced suspension along with intelligent all-wheel drive made this expensive vehicle really capable in the wild. You can drive through the most difficult terrains and still travel in luxury and be sure that you will arrive safe and sound. This is just amazing and too bad that most Lexus GX owners will never understand its true potential.
Ram Power Wagon

ram_2500_power_wagon_crew_cab_15

Dodge revived one of the greatest names in their history and gave it to specially prepared Ram which has only one purpose, and that is to be as tough and usable as possible. The regular Ram 1500 has got a lot of upgrades in terms of suspension, drivetrain, brakes and other components in order to make it into a Power Wagon. The result is pretty impressive because this is the truck that is equally at home in the mud or on the highway and it is equally good as a work vehicle or off-road truck. It is the best of both worlds and a great choice for anybody who is looking for a rugged truck.
Ford Raptor

ford_f-150_11_1

There isn’t anything on the market today that comes even close to the Ford Raptor. Based on the all-aluminum new F-150 truck, Raptor is an off-road beast with 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. It has 10-speed automatic transmission, full racing suspension with dual shocks per each wheel, heavy duty components, strengthened frame and body and off-road tires. The main purpose of this vehicle is to go over any terrain, jump sand dunes, splash through mud and climb on rocks faster and better than anything out there. And we have to say that Raptor accomplishes that making it the fastest street-legal off-road vehicle on the planet.
Mercedes G-Class

mercedes-benz_g_500_34

Introduced in the late ’70s, the Mercedes G-Class is one of those legendary models that changed very little during almost 40 years of production. Built as a military vehicle but soon presented to the civilian market, G-Class was always known for excellent off-road capabilities, quality, durability, and power. In the last 10 years, it became popular as a luxury ride but G-Class is much more than that. The advanced suspension, strong frame and powerful engine make this boxy SUV climb mountains and go through the deserts like it’s nothing. The only problem is its $122,000 base price but for that kind of cash, buyers will get top notch engineering, superb quality, and timeless design.

Land Rover Defender

Yes, we know that Land Rover discontinued the Defender in 2016 but they are still available and if you hurry up, you can get this everlasting piece of British motoring history. The Defender, similar to Jeep Wrangler is one of the few true off-road vehicles converted to street use. Over the years, it was modified quite a bit but the basic construction, compact dimensions, aluminum body, and purpose stayed the same. That is why it was and it still is one of toughest and most durable SUVs on the market, a car that is capable of going through the jungle but still cool enough to go to dinner in a fancy restaurant. The Defender will be missed and we hope that Land Rover will replace it with something equally good.

Despite the fact that it looks like a luxury suite on wheels and it is the size of an apartment block, this Cadillac is one tough SUV. The body on frame construction, heavy-duty suspension, powerful V8 engine with 420 hp and big tow rating makes this luxury model one very capable car. Of course, the off-road driving is not its strongest side since this is a big and heavy SUV but the Escalade will provide good protection and can endure a lot of punishment. This is why the Cadillac Escalade is often used as the basis for bulletproofing and part of the motorcades of politicians and VIPs.
